It was not until 1885 that the first digital watch for IWC
was created, based on a patent from an Austrian named
Pallweber. Despite the simplicity the watch maintained, it
was a work of genius. To this day the work of the
Pallweber's is extremely rare and a large collector's item.

From 1895 to 1900 IWC saw major sales increases all around.
In Germany, the company saw an increase from 553,500 to
805,000 francs. Russia went from a measly 29,400 to an
incredible 182,300 francs. These remarkable sales
increases were due largely to the acumen of the company's
management as well as the incredible staff of employees.

After years of ups and downs, 1974 saw a rise in gold
prices by nearly 4 times the usual amount and as a result,
the price of watch exports rose by as much as 250%.
Despite this, IWC watches continued with their traditional
watchmaking while surprising the watch industry with one
innovation after another. It built up a sold line of
top-quality pocket watches.

In 1978 the company launched its very first compass watch,
which was followed by the ground-breaking introduction of
titanium to be used in watches and cases. It was Otto
Heller that was responsible for this remarkable change of

The History of Jaeger Lecoultre Watches

A brilliant inventor and self-taught watchmaker,
Antoine-LeCoultre founded his first workshop in 1833,
following the invention of a machine to produce watchmaking
pinions. Ever since, the Manufacture Jaeger-Lecoultre has
developed constantly around the founder's original
workshops.

Surprisingly enough, it was neither a physicist nor an
engineer who first measured the micron; it was Antoine
LeCoultre, in 1844. He had created watch components that
were so perfect no tool could actually detect their degree
of inaccuracy. He followed that up by inventing the world's
most accurate instrument: the Millionometer, which served
as a benchmark for over half a century.

In 1847, LeCoultre created a revolutionary system that was
to do away with the need for keys to rewind and set
watches. His simple and brilliant solution was a pushbutton
that activated a lever to switch from one function to
another. It was the first keyless winding mechanism, and
the first reliable system that eliminated the need for keys
to wind or set a watch.

In 1866, when Swiss watchmaking was still structured around
small home-run workshops, Antoine LeCoultre and his son
Elie decided to bring together under one rood the many
skills involved in making watches, and installed a
steam-driven machine to operate their new tools. LeCoultre
& Cie thus became the first Manufacture in the
Vallée de Joux.

It was in 1903 when the Parisian Edmond Jaeger set Swiss
watchmakers the challenge of producing ultra-thin calibres.
It would lead to the Calibre 145, the world's thinnest
mechanical movement, measuring no more than 1.38 mm, and
the friendship of Antoine LeCoultre's grandson,
Jacques-Devid LeCoultre. These two men would give a rise to
a range of horological wonders, and eventually the birth of
the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand in 1937.

In the year 1908, the Manufacture created its first
rectangular-shaped calibre in response to the challenge
created to miniaturize watches to wear on the wrist. By the
"Roaring 20s" (1920s), very small ladies' wristwatches were
all the rage, but extreme miniaturization always led to a
loss of reliability and precision. The Duoplan brilliantly
solved this problem by arranging its parts on split levels.
It would lead to the world's smallest movement, Calibre
101. Outdoing the Calibre 145, Jaeger-Lecoultre
miniaturized the Duoplan caliber to the extreme, weighing
in at barely one gram and comprising of 74 parts. Its
record is still unmatched to this date.

Since its founding, the Manufacture has created and
produced over 1,000 different calibres in many varieties.
Over 200 patented inventions have contributed to the
progress of Swiss watchmaking in the field of movements, as

to send you a message.

work out what has happened. During this time, either the item
has been delivered or the seller agrees to refund you the money.

you have obtained the item, or unsatisfactorily by claiming $200
under eBay's purchase protection program. This can be done after
30 days, or 10 days if the seller did not respond.

However, this is not the only route of recourse for a
unsatisfied buyer. Apart from eBay's own dispute settlement
process, there exist other third-party mediators. This is used
mainly if the item is of high value. One such third-party
meditor is SquareTrade at http://www.squaretrade.com, who
is a third party mediator to many websites. They contact the
seller and act as a mediator between the buyer and seller to
negotiate.

Committed sellers with a good reputation, who are willing to go
through SquareTrade's mediation for disputes are allowed to
display the SquareTrade mark on their auction. This gives their
buyers $250 fraud protection as well as confidence in the
seller. However, one must always be careful to avoid being a
victim of fraud. There are a few specific scams which are

* Online auctions are easier to locate in advance than their
live counterparts. They don't involve opening bids,
auctioneers trying to incite bids, or travel time or expenses. Many
allow proxy bidding, which can save you even more time. And since
you're already online, doing your market research is a piece
of cake.

The good news is that most police auction lots have no
minimum bid (or reserve) attached. This leaves you room to
find some high-margin deals. While a live auctioneer may try
to open the bidding at a certain price-point, if no one responds, it
will come down and continue coming down until someone jumps in.

The bad news is that police auctions aren't well-publicized,
so finding them can be a challenging task. Most police
websites, if they include auction info at all, don't update it
frequently.

Their next tier of advertising is usually the classified
section of the newspaper. This lack of publicity makes these
events difficult to track down; but it also means that, for those
who find them, there won't be a lot of competition running up
the bids.

One option you have is to simply call your local police
department (not 911) and ask about upcoming auctions. You
can also sign-up for a subscription service, like PoliceAuctions.com
or GovernmentAuctions.org, which will supply you with a centralized
source of event information.

Police auctions take a decided effort to track down, but the
value they offer more than makes it worthwhile. If you take

especially if there are two or more similar items that you
are interested in. Making a few friends can provide you with the
contacts to work together on auctions in the long term.
Taking in turns to bid on different auctions results in a win-win
situation for all involved.

Acting as a discerning buyer also intimidates the seller
into feeling better about a lower price. Asking detailed
questions about the condition of the item, acting as a
knowledgeable buyer also makes the seller reconsider
his price, and he is more likely to give you a lower price
than he originally requested. With the number of sellers
on eBay now, common items have their prices forced to
extremely low prices. This is how the market functions
- supply and demand.

Lastly, buying in bulk allows you to purchase a sellers
stock for extremely low prices. When auctions are slow, bulk
offers usually have the seller eager to offload their goods for a
low price. Essentially, the longer you spend on eBay, the more
experienced and discerning you become, and the greater the
chance you'll stumble upon an auction for something unique
and totally unexpected.

to the public. I have been warned however that there are certain
things that you must be aware of when you attend. I wanted to
write briefly about some information that was made available
to me through my research.

1. Educate, educate, educate. Information here is key. Do
not expect too much. Going to an impounded car auction does not
guarantee that you will get the best vehicle available at
the cheapest price. It is just like any other auction in that
respect. If the car is a good buy, there will be more bids
made on it, and the prices will rise. It is important to note
that you may have to attend a few auctions to get the hang of
what is going on. You can then learn to make what bids and when.

2. Inspect the Vehicles - Get an early start because you
have the option of examining them before the actual auction. You
will also have history and VIN reports to refer to, so you can
make an informed bid. This is very important and can't be
stressed enough. Sit in the cars, start them up etc. Take help of a
good auto mechanic in case you yourself are not skilled in
checking cars. There will be a wide variety of choices, different
models and of different years of manufacture, at impounded car
auctions. You will even find rare and luxury cars at great
prices. These cars are usually in good shape, sometimes
almost new.

3. Don't rush things and don't get caught up in bidding
fever! Bring your Kelley Blue Book along with you. It's important
to know car prices. All too often people get caught up in the
excitement of bidding just for the sake of bidding and pay
too much. Learn by observing and reading appropriate guides.
When you are ready and comfortable, you have more chances to
win at the auction. To buy impounded cars is nothing challenging,
but you need to ensure great condition at the lowest price
around.

this process. They will give you as much information as you need
about the impounded car auctions coming up in your area, the
schedules, the rules of the auctions and, at times, partial

It's usually when auctions are about to end that they get
half their bids ' sometimes that's when they get their only
bids. If you want your item to sell for a good price, then,
it makes no sense to let it finish on a day and time when
no-one's going to be around to place bids or buy.

Selling to Business consumers.

If you're selling business equipment and have mostly
business customers, you should really aim to have your
auctions finishing between 9am and 5pm on weekdays. It is
worth, however, trying to avoid mornings and avoiding the
'lead-in' and 'lead-out' that takes place on Monday and
Friday themselves.

Selling to Home consumers.

If most of your sales are to private customers having it
shipped to their own home, then you want your auctions to
finish when these kind of customers will be around.
Unfortunately, these times are the opposite of what they are
for the business customers. The ideal time to catch a home
customer is on a Sunday evening.

Listing Durations.

In order to get your listings to end on a particular day,
you can simply change the duration of your auctions
depending on what day it is. For example, if you mostly sell
to home consumers and the day today is Thursday, then your
auction needs to run for either 3 or 10 days to hit a
Sunday. If you sell more to business and the day today is
Friday, then:

a 1 day auction would not be good (finishing on Saturday and
no-one will be around to buy or bid), 3 days would be
alright (Monday), 5 days would be good (Wednesday), 7 days
would be good (another Friday), and 10 days would be good as
well (Monday again).

You could draw up a little timetable of when you should and
shouldn't be listing depending on the days of the week '
make it red, amber and green, traffic light style, and stick
it on your wall. You'll want to experiment to find what day
is the best day to end an auction, or you can use a variety
of web-based research tools to determine what day and what
auction duration is best for you product.

Scheduled Listings.

Of course, if that all sounds like too much trouble then
there is an easier ' if slightly more expensive ' way of
doing things. Simply use any of the many tools that let you
schedule listings (almost all listing programs and sites do)
' you can set the start date for any day and time you feel
like.

Be aware that you will have to pay a few cents per listing
for this if you do it through eBay. With some software, you
may also need to leave your computer on all the time, so the
software can start the auctions when it's supposed to. The
advantage of this method, however, is that there will be no
per-listing fee, since the auctions were scheduled through
your computer and not through eBay. Check out Turbolister

fees and upload all the auctions you want all at the same

Also consider that listing durations can be used to generate
a sense of urgency, especially with sought after items.

The history of IWC watches dates back to 1868 when an
American by the name of Florentine Ariosto Jones founded a
watch factory in Switzerland. After meeting Johann
Heinrich Moser in 1850, the two teamed up to lay the

increases were due largely to the acumen of the company's
management as well as the incredible staff of employees.

After years of ups and downs, 1974 saw a rise in gold
prices by nearly 4 times the usual amount and as a result,
the price of watch exports rose by as much as 250%.
Despite this, IWC watches continued with their traditional
watchmaking while surprising the watch industry with one
innovation after another. It built up a sold line of
top-quality pocket watches.

In 1978 the company launched its very first compass watch,
which was followed by the ground-breaking introduction of
titanium to be used in watches and cases. It was Otto
Heller that was responsible for this remarkable change of
direction that truly put IWC watches on the right path.

After years of remarkable service and craftsmanship, the
company celebrated its 125th anniversary in style with 300
employees. And in the spirit of the celebration there were
1000 Portuguese watches with the 982 calibre pocket watch
movements made in stainless steel, 500 in gold, and 250 in
platinum.

Baume found the "Freres Baume" trading entity in the Les
Bois Village in 1830, which lies within the Swiss Jura
Mountains. From there a dynasty took off among this family
that had already been making watches for several years.

In 1834, members of the Baume family founded the Societe
Baume Feres in Le Bois. At first the family targeted
enameled pocket watches, but it soon branched off into a
large company with great diversity. In 1844, Joseph
Celestin Baume traveled to England to set up business
relations. It was this trip that helped diversify the
company and spread their watches across Europe. Soon
after, watches signed "Waterloo," "Diviko" and "Sirdar"
opened markets in Australia and New Zealand.

In the early 1880's the second generation of the family
headed the company into more modernized watches.
Louis-Victor's son, Alcide Eugene headed the Swiss firm
while Alcide's brother, Arthur Joseph was managing the
London branch. Their elegance and precision was rewarded
in 1893 as their watches won the timing competitions at the
Kew- Teddington Observatory. The watches scored 91.3 out
of 100 possible.

The turn of the century saw new and exciting things for the
company beginning in 1912. It was in 1912 that William
Baume met the watchmaker and jeweler Paul Mercier at the
Geneva watch and jewelry shop in Haas. This meeting
between the two would eventually lead to a signing for the
establishment of Baume and Mercier in Geneva on November
26, 1918.

The agreement amongst the two proved to be an extremely
smart and successful one in years to come. Just three
years later in 1921 the company was rewarded again, this
time by the coveted Poincon de Geneve, which was the
official recognition of flawless quality products.

After World War II the company shifted its focus to
conventional men's watches, chronographs and ladies'
jewelry watches. In 1965 the Piaget family took control
over Baume et Mercier outbidding international competition
and that same year the new owners switched to electronic
tuning fork movements.

Currently, Baume et Mercier just opened a store in
Switzerland in 2004 and has made a name for itself as a
trendsetter. Continuous production and modernization in
watches such as the Riviera, which was released in 1980,

Omega Watches Make History with Co-Axial Escapement

In 1999, Omega made a huge impact on the watch industry by
introducing the very first co-axial escapement. The
introduction has been considered one of the most
significant advancements within the watch industry since
the invention of the lever escapement. After English
watchmaker George Daniels invented the co-axial escapement,
the first mass-produced watch incorporating the new feature
was distributed to the public in 1999.

The way the co-axial escapement functions, it uses
virtually no lubrication. Because of this, it eliminates
one of the shortcomings that are present with the
traditional lever escapement. By utilizing radial friction
instead of sliding friction at the impulse surfaces, the
co-axial escapement helps reduce friction. As friction is
reduced because of the co-axial escapement, theoretically
the watch should last much longer. In addition, you will
find that your watch maintains its accuracy and precision
over time.

Another benefit to the co-axial escapement is the smaller
lift angle and the increased arc of free vibration of the
balance wheel. Because of this, there is a greater part of
the total arc that is conducted free of interfering contact
with the pallet lever.

The original escapement has proved to be reliable and
durable over the past two centuries. It was designed by a
British maker Thomas Mudge and was eventually refined by
the Swiss. Although it has served its purpose, the one
downside to the conventional escapement is that the design
relies so heavily on sliding friction. The sliding
friction serves as the escape wheel impulse surfaces sweep
over the pallets to power the balance.

By having sliding friction in your watch, lubrication is
needed. Lubrication continues to be a weak point to the
lever escapement, and because of this George Daniels wanted
to eliminate sliding friction. By utilizing radial
friction, Daniels was able to eliminate sliding friction
and thus eliminate lubrication.

Many Omega timepieces have the co-axial escapement in them
now since being introduced to it in 1999. At the Basel
Watch and Jewelry Fair in 1999, Omega introduced a new
watch for the Deville line that was a chronometer-rated
limited edition watch. This was the first watch that
included the co-axial escapement that was being sold for
under $150,000.

Today, there are many watches that use the co-axial
escapement. Omega has ventured out and their
innovativeness was well felt with this invention. It was a
remarkable achievement by Omega and has contributed to an
already successful history within Omega timepieces.

linear oscillating mass. The linear oscillating mass
replaces the oscillating weight that was traditionally used
to wind an automatic watch movement. This helps make the
rotating movement run much more efficient and smoother.

the friction that is apparent in many other watches. This
is made possible with the 39 micro ball races that help
minimize friction in the power transmission system. This
helps replace and upgrade the traditional use of synthetic
red rubies.

There are three types of tax that you will be responsible
for when you start your eBay business. They are 1) sales
and use tax, 2) payroll tax and 3) income tax.

Sales and use tax - Just about every state, and many cities
and other local authorities, imposes a sales tax on items
sold. Each state has different rules, so it's important to
find out the rules in your state and city. As a seller,
you are responsible for collecting and remitting the proper
sales tax to the state you live in. You are also
responsible for preparing and submitting a report detailing
the amount of your sales and the sales tax collected.

You may also be subject to use taxes. This is taxes on
goods you purchased out of state that you did not pay sales
taxes on. The use tax generally applies to items purchased
out of state which would have been subject to sales tax if
the purchase transaction had taken place in state. The use
tax came about from the concern that purchasers could avoid
paying a state's sales tax by making their purchases
outside the state.

Payroll tax - The second type of tax that you are
responsible for as an eBay seller is payroll tax. If you
hire employees to help you with your eBay business, you are
required to withhold federal income taxes, Social Security
and Medicare taxes, and state income taxes. These taxes
must be submitted to the proper tax authorities on a
periodic basis (usually quarterly). In addition you must
pay unemployment insurance and workers' compensation on all
employees.

If you operate your business as an S or C Corporation, you
will need to setup payroll for yourself, and remit payroll
taxes on your own salary. If you operate as a Sole
Proprietorship, you pay self employment tax instead of
payroll tax.

Income tax - The final type of tax is the income tax. No
matter how your business is structured, you will be
required to pay income tax on the business' net profit.

Sole Proprietors pay income tax on their personal income
tax return (Form 1040). Your business profit is calculated
using Schedule C - Profit or Loss From Business, and your
profit is added to your other income to determine your tax
liability.

S Corporations file Form 1120S to report the business
profit or loss. A Schedule K-1 is then prepared, which
shows each shareholder's share of the net profit or loss
that needs to be declared on their personal tax return.

C Corporations file Form 1120 to both report the business
net profit and to calculate the resulting income tax.

Depending on the state you do business in, you may also be
subject to state income taxes on your business profits.
The state level taxes are often referred to as franchise
taxes.

As forecast in my last post the record for the price paid for a picture by a British artist has been well and truly broken. The previous record was set in 1990 when the final bid was $21.2m. The picture by JWM Turner was bought by an anonymous bidder at Christie's, New York, for nearly $36m which nearly doubles the previous record price.

If you are a fan of royalty a forthcoming auction will give you the chance acquire jewels owned by the late Princess Margaret. The sale will include the tiara worn by the princess at her wedding to Lord Snowdon. The sale is estimated to raise $3.5m.

On a slightly bitter note, I see that wine prices have dropped by 25% in auctions in South Africa. On the other hand interest rates on short-term Treasury bills rose in Monday's auction to the highest-lowest levels in more than five years.

From what you have read in previous articles you might have thought that an auction is simply a matter of offering something for sale, inviting people to bid and selling to the highest bidder. In fact it is a little more complicated than this for reasons which you will discover.

Over the years, eBay has introduced all sorts of different auction types, in an effort to give people more options when they buy and sell their things on eBay. There are many people who don’t like the idea that their item might sell for a far lower price than they intend. Equally, there are people who have hundreds of the same item and don’t want to sell them individually. This post gives you an overview of the different kinds of auctions and how to spot them.

Normal Auctions.

These are the bread-and-butter of eBay, the auctions everyone knows: you bid, others outbid you, you outbid them, and the winner gets the item. Simple.

Reserve Auctions.

Reserve auctions are for sellers who don’t want their items to sell for less than a certain price – a concept you’ll know about if you’re familiar with real auctions. They work just like normal auctions on eBay, except that you will be told if your bid has not met the reserve price set by the seller. If no-one is willing to meet this price, then the auction is cancelled, and the seller keeps the item.

You can spot these auctions by looking out for ‘Reserve not met’ or ‘Reserve met’ written next to the current bid on an item’s description page.

Fixed Price (‘Buy it Now’) Auctions.

Buy it Now auctions can work in one of two ways. A seller might add a Buy it Now button to a normal auction, meaning that you can choose either to bid normally or to simply pay the asking price and avoid the whole bidding process. Some sellers, though, now cut out the auction process altogether and simply list all their items at fixed price. Recently, eBay added a twist to fixed price auctions: the ‘best offer’. This means that you can negotiate a price to someone who offers their items using Buy it Now, which could be a great way to get a bargain on things that don’t seem to be selling.

Fixed price auctions are easy to spot, as they have a little ‘Buy it Now’ logo either next to or instead of the current number of bids on the search listings page.

Multiple Item (‘Dutch’) Auctions.

These are auctions where a seller is selling more than one of a certain item. Dutch auctions can be done by bidding. Buyers bid a price and say how many items they want, and then everyone pays the lowest price that was bid by one of the winning bidders. If you have trouble getting your head around that, then don’t worry – everyone else does too! These auctions are very rare.

What is more common is when a seller has a lot of one item, and lists it using a combination of two auction types: a multiple-item fixed price auction. This just means that they say how many they have, and offer them at a fixed price. You can enter how many you want and then just click Buy it Now to get them.

However many guarantees of safety eBay might make to you, nothing is certain: if you just give your money to scammers all the time without doing any checks then the chances are you won’t get all of that money back.

That’s why you should always check the seller’s reputation, or ‘feedback rating’. This is a quick and easy-to-read summary of their history as an eBay seller, which gives you some idea of whether or not you should trust them with your money. Buying anything is a calculated risk: you want to minimise that risk.

How to Check Feedback Ratings.

On each item’s description page, there is a box in the top-right hand corner about the seller, with the title ‘Seller information’. This contains the seller’s name, their feedback score, and their positive feedback percentage, as well as any stars they have earned.

Different coloured stars are given to eBay sellers depending on their rating, in this sequence: yellow, blue, turquoise, purple, red, green, shooting yellow, shooting turquoise, shooting purple, shooting red. Anyone with a ‘shooting’ star is an experienced eBay member who you should be able to trust.

If you click on the seller’s name, you can get to a more detailed view of their reputation – their ‘member profile’ page. This page shows the total number of people who gave them a positive or negative rating, as well as a breakdown by time. You can also see a complete history of all the comments that have ever been left about them, with the most recent first.

What to Look For.

You might assume that anyone with a very high number can be trusted, but that isn’t always true. It is more important to look at their positive feedback percentage – and you should really consider anything below 99% to be a red flag and investigate further.

Take a look through the first visible page with the most recent transactions: are there any negative comments? What do they say? Take others’ experiences into account, as they could happen to you if you deal with this person. Be careful not to punish sellers unfairly, however, if they did bad things in their past on eBay but have improved since. You should look at the breakdown by time and ignore any negative feedback that was left a long time ago. Equally, though, you should sit up and pay attention if a seller seems to have been left an out-of-character amount of bad feedback in the last month or so.

Now that you know who to trust, it is worth learning a little more about how the different kinds of auctions work, so that you don’t accidentally slip up and make yourself and your feedback page look bad. What is a "Feedback Rating"?

In my last post I said that I would explain the system of feedback rating employed by eBay. The basic idea is very simple and at the same time very effective. Although there are ways that the system can be abused, by and large it works very well and is one of the reasons for eBay's great success.

Your reputation as a buyer (or ‘feedback rating’) is the most important thing people see when they deal with you on eBay. It is on the basis of this little number that they will decide whether they can trust you or not.

Each time you buy or sell something on eBay, people can leave feedback for you, and you can leave feedback for them. This feedback can be positive, negative, or neutral, along with a comment. Your feedback rating, then, is worked out using a very simple sum: the number of positive feedback comments people have left for you, minus the number of negative ones. This means that someone with a feedback rating of 28, for example, might have 30 positive ratings and 2 negative ones.

If you are a considerate buyer, then you should find that positive feedback will just appear next to your username, without you needing to do anything. If you want to help it along, though, there are a few things you can do.

Always leave feedback for others: People will feel an obligation to leave feedback for you if you leave it for them (eBay will send you an email after each transaction to offer you the opportunity). Take the time to write a positive comment about sellers who do what they should and the chances are they’ll do the same for you.

Pay promptly: Sellers love nothing more than to be paid promptly – paying as soon as the auction ends saves the seller all sorts of worry, especially if you pay by credit card or another electronic method. You will often find that your positive feedback appears within a few minutes of you paying if you pay as soon as the auction ends.

Don’t be a difficult customer: Understand that your seller might take a day or so to respond to you, and perhaps a few days to send your item – harassing them is nasty and unnecessary, and won’t get you good feedback.

Build relationships: If a seller sells a lot of a certain kind of thing you like, buy from them a few more times. They will be very happy to find a regular customer, and will go out of their way to leave positive feedback like ‘a joy to deal with as ever’. Also, they might offer you a few special deals!

Sellers won’t generally be reluctant to sell to buyers without much of a reputation, simply because it is the buyer who takes most of the risk in a transaction. It is worth remembering, however, that transactions where you are the seller and where you are the buyer are counted towards the same feedback total – so if you ever want to start selling, being a good buyer is especially worthwhile.

On eBay, people pay far more attention to sellers’ ratings than they do to buyers’ – most sellers can’t be bothered to check their buyers’ feedback, while bad feedback on a seller can (and should) be a dealbreaker. When you are buying, then, you need to worry more about the seller’s reputation than you do about your own, and that’s why the next post will be all about sellers’ feedback ratings.

While you do need to take sensible precautions when buying goods on eBay, I should emphasise that the vast majority of sellers are genuine honest people and the majority of transactions are completed without a hitch. That being said there are a few individuals who will take advantage of an inexperienced buyer so you need to keep your wits about you.

It is important to remember that eBay is a lot like a marketplace. There will always be a dodgy guy in the corner, selling things that most people wouldn’t touch. The trouble is that, on the Internet, these people can be a little harder to spot. Here are ten tips to help you keep an eye out for the rip-off merchants.

1. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is: This holds for everything in life, but especially for eBay. Things that seem too cheap are usually too cheap for a reason – it might be a complete scam, or the items might just be of extremely poor quality. Investigate before you go further.

2. Know the value of what you want to buy: There are people on eBay who regularly bid such high prices for used cameras that they might as well have gone out and bought them brand new. Check around for prices first.

3. Only bid on real things: eBay has plenty of people who are trying to sell all sorts of schemes and scams. It is never worth bidding for these, no matter how cheap they might be.

4. Don’t do anything outside eBay: Occasionally people will ask you to send them money outside eBay, to avoid the fees eBay charges sellers. Any money you send this way is entirely insecure – don’t do it.

5. Be careful where you send payment: People may hack into others’ accounts, and ask you to send payment to addresses that eBay has not confirmed as belonging to that account – you might send your money and receive nothing in return.

6. Look out for sellers who suddenly change what they sell: Sellers can look like they’ve made lots of transactions, when really they’ve never sold anything of worth. If they suddenly start selling $1,000 televisions, steer clear – the chances are they’re planning to run off with the money.

7. Beware the shill bidder: If someone who doesn’t seem to have bought anything before is constantly outbidding you on a certain item, be suspicious. It might be a seller ‘shill bidding’ to force up his item’s price.

8. Don’t use the seller’s escrow service: If an escrow service is recommended to you by a seller, it could well be owned and run by them – and they’re quite likely to keep your money and send you nothing.

9. Pay electronically: You are more likely to be able to recover any losses if you pay using a credit card instead of sending out cheques and money orders – these low-tech payment methods can’t be tracked as easily.

10. Buy from reputable sellers: Each seller has a number next to their name, which is their feedback rating. The higher this rating, the more you can trust them.

On that last point, feedback ratings are the most important way that buyers and sellers can protect themselves on eBay – and you, as a buyer, have a rating too! Can you trust the eBay system?

If you have not bought anything through eBay before, it is not surprising that you will be concerned about how secure the system is and whether things will go as smoothly as the instructions on the site indicate. When you are dealing with an organisation for the first time, it is only natural that you should be anxious. In this post I will outline some of the potential pitfalls that you could encounter and explain the ways that you can protect yourself from any problems.

When you buy things on eBay, you pay the seller before they send you anything. This means that you, as a buyer, are vulnerable to all sorts of problems. You might not get the items you have paid for, or they might be damaged or faulty. Luckily, you have two very important rights when you buy on eBay.

The Right to Receive Your Item.

Maybe the seller never sent the item, or maybe it got lost in the post. Whatever happened, you paid for the item. If it doesn’t arrive in the post as described, you have the right to a replacement or a refund, whether it’s the seller’s fault or not. The fact that you bought something on eBay doesn’t mean that you don’t have the exact same rights that you would have if you bought it in a shop (these rights are pretty much the same all over the world). Plus, under eBay’s rules, the seller isn’t allowed to change their mind about selling you the item: once the auction ends, it becomes a contract – you must buy and they must sell, or face eBay’s penalties.

The Right for Your Item to Be as Described in the Auction.

Sometimes sellers don’t wrap items properly, and so they get broken. Occasionally they write descriptions that are misleading or just plain wrong to begin with, leaving out vital details that would have caused you to change your mind about buying. If this happens to you, you again have the right to a replacement or a refund.

So How Do I Use My Rights?

First, you should take it up with the seller – most will be responsive, as do not want to have their reputation damaged when an upset buyer leaves negative feedback for all their future buyers to see. If that doesn’t work, contact eBay. While eBay don’t have many people handling complaints, they do have a relatively effective set of automatic process to handle common problems buyers and sellers have with one another. Finally, if that doesn’t work, then you should seek advice from consumer groups in your country, and as a last resort from the police. You should never have to get this far, though: problems on eBay that can’t be resolved easily are extremely rare.

Don’t Be Too Quick.

Remember not to get too annoyed and be unfair to the seller: nice sellers have agreed to give me refunds for undelivered items, only for me to find out a few weeks later that they were being held for me at the post office! Always try your best to communicate and think of everything that might have gone wrong: eBay works best when buyers and sellers sort out their problems together, instead of reporting each other to the authorities straight away. More often that not receiving what they paid for, buyers have an altogether different problem: they knew what they were paying for, but didn’t realise that what they were paying for was overpriced, low quality or a scam. Have you ever heard of eBay? In 2005 that is a silly question because the name is mentioned everywhere. But for anyone who hasn't, then I am going to give you the full details right here. For those of you who are already in the know, please forgive me for running over the basics again. However even if you are an experienced eBayer, you may still want to read this since there will be a few tips and tricks that will be new to you.

So What is eBay?

eBay is an online auction website – and not just any auction site, but the biggest of the world online auctions. If you know how an auction works, then you already know how roughly eBay works. Someone adds something they want to sell to the site, and then buyers come along and place bids on it. The highest bid wins the item! It’s that simple.

eBay being an online auction makes a big difference, though. Buying and selling are not reserved for any elite. eBay accept almost any item, no matter how small, and will then advertise it on their sites all over the world. Collectible autographs, Franklin Mint collectibles and even Davy Crockett Cards are on eBay as well as many more conventional items. It’s a powerful combination of an auction and a slightly chaotic marketplace.

What is Bidding?

Bidding is when you say how much you will pay for an item in an auction. Bidding on eBay, however, doesn’t work in exactly the same way as a normal auction, at least in theory. On eBay, you tell the site what the maximum you are willing to pay for each item is, and then eBay places the bids on your behalf. That means you could say you were willing to pay up to $100 for something and only have to pay $50, if that was the highest maximum bid anyone else placed. It’s not as complicated as it sounds – the best way to get used to it is to give it a try. First, the best thing to do is to go to the eBay website designed for your country. If you don’t know the address for it, just go to www.ebay.com and it will tell you there. Now, on the front page you should see a big box marked ‘search’: just type in anything that you’d like to buy here.

Wasn’t that easy? Now you should have a list of items for sale in front of you, along with how much people are currently bidding for them and the time when bidding ends for each item. If you click one of these, you can read the description, and then – if you’re happy with the item and happy to pay more than the current highest bidder is – you can bid!

How Do I Bid?

Go ahead and scroll down to the bottom of an item’s description page, and type the maximum you are willing to pay (your maximum bid) into the box. Then simply press the ‘place bid’ button – you will need to sign in once you press the button, or go through a quick registration process if you don’t have an eBay username).

If someone else’s maximum bid on that item is higher than yours, then eBay will tell you and give you the opportunity to bid again. Otherwise, you’re now the new highest bidder! All you need to do now is wait until the end of the auction – if someone else outbids you, then eBay will email you and you can bid again.
